The 2011 – 2012 Production of History Seminar

The Production of History Working Group is holding an informal seminar at the CUNY Graduate Center during the 2011 – 2012 academic year. The group will meet once per month to discuss readings and host guest speakers on the following themes:

  1. History, space and place
  2. Heritage
  3. Archives and documentation

Our seminar meeting schedule is as follows:

    Discussion: Michel-Rolph Trouillot‘s Silencing the Past: Power and the Production of History
    with Prof. John Collins (Anthropology, CUNY GC/Queens College)
  • October 21
    Discussion: Carolyn Steedman‘s Dust: The Archive and Cultural History
  • November 11
    Disscussion: readings in dialog: Eric Hobsbawm‘s introduction to the book The Invention of Tradition and selections from Joanne Rappaport‘s Cumber Reborn
  • December 2
    Speaker: Prof. Gary Wilder (Anthropology, CUNY GC) and Prof. Herman Bennett (History, CUNY GC) on historiography
  • February 10
    Speaker: Prof. José Reginaldo Gonçalves (Anthropology, Federal University of Rio De Janeiro)
  • March 2
    Speaker: Prof. Alondra Nelson (Sociology, Columbia) re: her new edited collection, Genetics and the Unsettled Past: The Collision of DNA, Race and History
  • March 30 & April 20:
    Production of History Production:
    “Works in Progress” Sessions 1 & 2

    In our last two sessions of this year’s seminar a few members of the seminar group will present works in progress — articles, conference presentations, or book chapters that they are currently working on — to discuss with the group.
